Awa Odori

I wasn’t sure how the visiting group of dancer would pull off , well , their dance in the tiny Library, but they did! I was nearby and didn’t want to miss this chance to see more of Japan so of course, I lugged my heavy camera bag around with me.

Apparently, Awa odori is a huge festival where people dance, in Japan. It’s to welcome the souls of ancestors, which are believed to come to their living relatives homes for a few days.

Awa-odori is also known as the “fool’s dance”

It’s a fool who dances and a fool who watches; if both are fools, you might as well dance!”

Awa- is the former name for the tokushima prefecture.

The thing about this dance is that your arms are always up and you move . The dance was  originally thought to have been invented during a celebration way back, and people got so drunk, they started dancing with arms and legs out and about, flailing.  Now that I think about it, it was kind of funny and simple looking. Compared to those mad moves during the other matsuri, these ones didn’t need any lessons.

Here are more pics!
